“Yesterday I had the privilege to spend my afternoon with the Humane Society during their lobby day.

“Reducing cruelty to animals is not just good for the animals; it teaches compassion that results in less cruelty to people and a healthier, happier and more just society. We have a great tradition in Washington of taking care of our environment, and that includes taking care of animals — from your neighborhood cat to some of our most threated wildlife. That’s why I’ve proudly co-sponsored House Bill 2115, which would ban the capture of whales and dolphins in Washington waters, and House Bill 1131, which would crack down on ivory traded in our state.

“I’ve supported this legislation because I believe if we want to see change across the planet then we have to change how we live at home. These bills, along with the important work the Humane Society does, advance that mission, and make us better as a state.

“And lastly, I’d like to humbly thank the Humane Society members — and all constituents — who travel all the way down here to fight for things they care about. It’s important to be involved and speak up when you see things we could do better. Without your input, our jobs are impossible. Thank you.”
