Stanford Does JLARC, Part Deux

It goes by the beguiling moniker “JLARC,” and its raison d’être is boosting efficiency and accountability in the public sector. Doing more with less, some call it, or just plain old working smarter. But call it what you will, the fact of the matter is that taxpayer dollars simply have to be stretched as far as possible.

20130510_LegWA_0019abIn that good-government vein, state Rep. Derek Stanford has been reappointed to this very entity: the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Committee (JLARC) by Speaker of the Washington State House of Representatives Frank Chopp. JLARC carries out performance audits, program evaluations, and other significant studies. Stanford is one of 16 legislators – eight representatives and eight senators split evenly between Republicans and Democrats – who serve on this key committee.

“We focus on efficiency and accountability, which is an objective best-reached through greater public participation in the political process,” Stanford said. “Today, it’s more important than ever that folks get involved. Everyday people are the ones paying taxes to keep our public programs and services running, so they should certainly have a strong hand on the steering wheel.”

“ JLARC recommendations have significant implications for policy, accountability, program and fiscal matters. Committee members help engage everyday citizens as a way to strengthen their government, and make it more effective and responsive.”
