Rep. Hansen proposes Free to Finish College program

OLYMPIA – Chair of the House Higher Education Committee, Rep. Drew Hansen (D-Bainbridge Island), has proposed the Free to Finish College plan.

“We have a lot of students who had to interrupt their education just short of earning their degree. We want to help those students come back and finish that degree so they can get better jobs and provide for their families,” said Rep. Hansen.

Free to Finish College will allow some former students who had to interrupt their educations to re-enroll in college and finish their degrees tuition free.

The proposal would cover students who are not currently enrolled and haven’t been enrolled for the last three years, don’t already have a college degree or certificate, and are 15 credits or less – about one quarter’s worth of credits – from their degree or certificate.

The Free to Finish College program is scheduled for public hearing today at 1:30 p.m. in the House Committee on Higher Education and executive session on Friday at 8 a.m.
