1,000 teachers rally in Olympia

Washington Education Association Rally at the Washington State Capitol.Over 1,000 teachers from the Washington Education Association rallied in Olympia today in support of public schools. Several members of our caucus were on hand to show our support for fully funding education.

Negotiators from our caucus, the Senate Republican Caucus, and the Governor’s office are meeting daily to develop a compromise operating budget. Rhetoric aside, all budgets need at least 25 votes in the Senate and 50 votes in the House before they can be sent to the Governor for approval.

The so-called “bipartisan” Senate budget does not have 50 votes in the House, so now is the time for compromise.

As discussions continue, it is important to remember that the Legislature is under a direct mandate from the Supreme Court to make good on our promise to fully fund education.

No gimmicks.

No one-time revenues.

No sweeping constitutionally protected school construction funds.

House Democrats and Governor Inslee proposed budgets that enact fair and meaningful tax reform that will allow us to meet our McCleary obligations without gimmicks.
