Tragedy on the Aurora Bridge

I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims of the terrible tragedy on the Aurora Bridge yesterday, September 24. My heart goes out to all those affected.

I am appreciative of the coordinated efforts among local, state, and federal officials as they work to understand the circumstances of the collision and provide recommendations for improved future safety.

In the days ahead, I encourage people to seek support from the many community organizations ready to help. For updated information on resources provided by the City of Seattle please visit the Office of the Mayor’s website.

The City of Seattle is offering a 211 phone line to help answer questions. You can also find news updates on the North Seattle College news page.

The City of Seattle released the following updates early this morning:

  • The bridge has opened to traffic and Metro Transit has resumed normal routes.
  • SDOT has repaired any damage to bridge; it is safe and ready to go.
  • SPD has a list of those injured, cross-checking with the college, and are working to notify all the families.
  • 211 will accept calls for those needing support services (mental health, lodging, transportation, etc.) Once 211 is dialed, callers will be directed to the appropriate resource
  • Delta Airlines is willing to provide international flights as needed, and Alaska Airlines the same for domestic flights. We are also working with area hotels to provide lodging for families of victims needing to travel.
  • North Seattle College is setting up a comfort room for students and families affected by the incident.
