Citizen survey results for the 44th District – EDUCATION

How can we work together to solve traffic gridlock, give our kids a better education and create jobs?

Citizens from around the district took the time to share their thoughts and their stories.

Here’s what people had to say about education, with specific comments below this chart:

Dunshee survey results on education

Constituent survey responses about education

“Like Running Start, but would like to see more internships with local business – so young adults could get hands-on experience to go with their education. Would like to see more ‘job counseling’ at high school level. Teachers have so MUCH to deal with….improved pay – with move towards year round school… maybe summer programs which are the internships???”

“I will say that Penny Creek does a great job of incorporating the arts and STEM into curriculum and after school activities, but I know that’s not the case at many schools. I also see many schools with an extraordinary number of portables, as well as small and outdated playgrounds. As a parent of a child recently diagnosed with ADHD and sensory processing disorder, I’d like to see more support for families trying to navigate the school system while being an advocate for their child. As an employee of the Snohomish Health District, I’d also like to see funding and support for programs like 5210, Get Up & Go, Breakfast After the Bell, and piloting Recess Before Lunch.”

“I have a daughter-in-law that teaches 3rd grade in the Everett School District. I know how hard she works and how many EXTRA hours she puts in. People who say that teachers get the summer off are wrong; they are always taking classes during the summer. My daughter also works for the Everett School District and has not had a raise for four years.”

“1) Student to teacher ratio should be less than 20 to 1. 2) Love the idea on charter. 3) Access to arts is a cultural must. 3) These core fundamentals are needed to succeed today. 4) Not opposed to fair pay but teachers success should be monitored and paid appropriately, ‘performance based.’ 5) Design should be as such that would facilitate easier update in the near future and fit the part as a center for education not a cold environment.”

Next week, I’ll report back on what people thought about transportation, with some local problem spots and possible solutions from citizens.

It’s been a pleasure reading your comments and ideas. Thanks for taking the time.
