Legislative Assistant to Rep. Marcus Riccelli

Deputy Whip; Vice Chair, Health Care & Wellness Committee – Washington State House of Representatives

We are seeking an enthusiastic self-starter to join an energetic team committed to moving the Spokane region forward.

Mission: To assist Rep. Riccelli in successfully fulfilling his public obligations by providing support services in the areas of communication, research, public relations, and administration.

Reports to: Representative Riccelli, Caucus Staff Director, Chief Clerk

Location: The primary work location is in Spokane during interim and in Olympia during the legislative session, with occasional overnight travel.

Compensation: Minimum salary starts at $37,000 a year – will increase depending on qualifications and education.

Necessary Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and discuss controversial issues with diplomacy and tact
  • Ability to research and analyze relevant constituent issues
  • Ability to track legislation and organize member briefings and materials
  • Ability to work independently to fully develop materials and propose next steps
  • Acute attention to detail, including the ability to conduct complex and detailed scheduling and travel arrangements
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks accurately and efficiently under time constraints
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the 3rd District, Spokane and Eastern Washington
  • Passion for and commitment to public service

Typical Assignments

      Administration

  • Manage the Representative’s schedule and travel, coordinating with stakeholders as appropriate
  • Manage daily operation of office including monthly reimbursements and daily reports
  • Supervise, as delegated by the member, independent interns and volunteers.  Coordinate with the intern coordinators to direct the work of interns

      Communication

  • Manage constituent inquiries and constituent services requests.
  • Facilitate and coordinate communication between the Representative, legislators, state officials, staff, agency personnel, stakeholders and constituents in the development and advancement of legislation
  • Serve as a liaison between the Representative and constituents of the Legislative District

      Research

  • Track advancement of bills through the legislative process.  This may entail monitoring of committee hearings, securing committee testimony and records preparation including remarks and summaries
  • Identify and monitor district specific issues
  • Work with OPR and Caucus staff to develop materials and prepare briefings for members

      Public Relations

  • Represent the office at legislative and community events
  • Staff the Representative at constituent and stakeholder meetings, tracking commitments and following up.
  • Work with the Representative, Communications staff, and other offices to organize town hall meetings, press conferences, and other district events.
