Toxic Children’s Products, Furniture, Banned in WA State

OLYMPIA – The Senate approved legislation (HB 2545) sponsored by Rep. Kevin Van De Wege (D-Sequim) that would ban the use of five toxic flame retardants in everyday items, like furniture and children’s products, and allows future study of other chemicals that are of concern.

“For years I’ve been pushing to ban these chemicals and I’m glad the Senate has finally agreed that these toxic chemicals have no place in our homes or around our children,” said Van De Wege, who is also a firefighter. “The industry is already moving in this direction and by banning these harmful and cancer-causing chemicals, we’re sending a strong message that safe alternatives must be the standard for products that effect our families.”

The legislation now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature.
