OLYMPIA
– Poulsbo state
Rep. Sherry Appleton
has been tapped for second three-year term on the
Washington State
Sentencing Guidelines Commission
(SGC). According to its website, the SGC “evaluate[s] and
monitor[s] adult and juvenile sentencing policies and practices,
recommend[s] modifications to the Governor and the Legislature and
serve[s] as a clearinghouse and information center on adult and juvenile
sentencing.”
“I welcome the chance to continue serving on the SGC,”
Appleton said. “Our goal – improving the justice system for all – is one I
think is common to people throughout the state. We want to be safe, we
want to be fair, and we want to be smart. The Commission is a great tool
for achieving those things.”
Appleton, who learned of her reappointment in a letter from
House Speaker Frank Chopp, is extensively involved in the state’s judicial and
criminal-justice arenas. She currently heads up the SGC’s Juvenile
Sentencing Committee, and was named to the state’s Public Defense Advisory
Committee earlier this year. In Olympia, she sits on the House Public
Safety and Emergency Preparedness Committee, and she’s a former member of the
Washington State Commission on Judicial Conduct and advisor to the United States
Civil Rights Commission.
First elected to the Legislature in 2004, the Democratic 23rd-district
lawmaker represents much of Kitsap County, including Bainbridge Island,
Silverdale, Poulsbo, Kingston and parts of Bremerton.
