Rep. Kessler honored for championing “sunshine” legislation24th District lawmaker one of six Key Award recipientsSeptember 24, 2007 SEATTLE – The Washington Coalition for Open Government recently honored eight individuals for their efforts to promote transparency in government. At its annual awards breakfast on September 21, the coalition presented one of six Key Awards to Rep. Lynn Kessler (D – Hoquiam). Kessler was selected for her work in championing legislation last session creating a new state “Sunshine Committee.” The committee, which includes four members of the public, will evaluate the validity of all current exemptions to public records law. Kessler’s bill, HB 1445, also clarified the existing public records statute, making it easier to understand. Protecting the public’s right to know has long been an important issue for Kessler, who serves as House Majority Leader. “Freedom of information and open records are central to the public’s trust in government,” Kessler said. “Without access to these records, people begin to question whether government is truly working in their best interests.” In addition to receiving WCOG’s Key Award, Kessler is also being honored by the Washington Newspaper Publisher’s Association next month. At their annual convention on October 5 in Yakima, she will be receiving the Freedom’s Light Award along with Attorney General Rob McKenna. The award recognizes Kessler’s sponsorship of the “Sunshine Committee” bill, as well as her “Reporter Shield Law” (HB 1366). ### For more information Media Staff Contact: Jennifer Zahn Spieler (360) 786-7201 Bill information HB 1445: http://aor.leg.wa.lcl/billsummary/default.aspx?Bill=1445&year=2007 HB 1366: http://aor.leg.wa.lcl/billsummary/default.aspx?Bill=1366&year=2007 Radio and TV News Directors To obtain broadcast-quality audio on this issue, or to arrange for TV or radio interviews, please contact Caucus Broadcast Coordinator Dan Frizzell at frizzell.dan@leg.wa.gov or (360) 786-7208.
