Statement from Rep. Kelli Linville on the Western Washington University football program

“As someone who represents Whatcom County and as a Western Washington University graduate myself, I am saddened by the university’s decision to terminate its football program. The program’s rich tradition and successful recent season are a testament to the commitment of players, coaches, staff, alumni, university officials and fans, past and present.

“The loss of this program is a grim reminder of the hard choices facing organizations across this state and nation during this economic downturn. In this era of belt-tightening and sacrifice, we must find ways to manage the limited resources that are outpaced by demands.

“Our tax dollars must first go to academic programs; however, I have offered to sit down with representatives of the alumni and administration to determine if there is another solution to funding our team. If the alumni can put together a proposal of sustained financial support, then I would encourage the trustees to look at it very carefully.

“I urge people to recognize the shared sacrifice and unpleasant cuts we must endure as we make our way through this recession, but I am confident that we will all step up to these challenges thoughtfully and creatively.”
