Groups honor Linville’s support for healthy farming, anti-poverty issues

OLYMPIA – Following the late-April conclusion of a legislative session
dominated by tough choices and a weak economy, state Rep. Kelli Linville
(D-Bellingham) has been recognized for her sustainable-farming and
anti-poverty advocacy. The Washington Sustainable Food & Farming Network
recognized Linville for her work in championing programs that support
sustainable farming, and the Statewide Poverty Action Network praised her
help and dedication to anti-poverty issues.
“I’m tremendously
honored by the recognition from the Washington Sustainable Food & Farming
Network and the Statewide Poverty Action Network—groups that are invaluable
partners in improving the lives of Washingtonians,” Linville said.
As the chair of the House Ways & Means Committee, which wrote the state’s
$31.4 billion operating budget, Linville said she tried her best to stay
true to the issues about which she’s passionate, although it wasn’t easy in
the midst of an unprecedented state budget shortfall.
“Even during a
time of economic crisis like this year, it’s important to hold true to our
values and avoid paralysis or inaction. Although many state programs were
reduced so we could maintain a balanced budget, we balanced it responsibly,
maintained our core values and also made progress on important policy
changes.”
Linville focused on several poverty-related issues during
the 2009 session. In the state operating budget, Linville made it a priority
to maintain the General Assistance Unemployable program that provides
support for people who are unemployable for physical and/or mental reasons.
Funding was also provided for outreach efforts to enroll more eligible
children in health care, in keeping with the goal of soon insuring every
child in Washington. Additionally, the budget protected the Medicare Part D
program, critical to helping many seniors afford their prescription drugs.
The Legislature this session continued to support the Local Food &
Healthy Kids program, although funding was reduced compared to 2008 in light
of this year’s budget challenges. The program helps schools provide
Washington-grown fresh fruits and vegetables to students. Linville
cosponsored the House version of the bill that created the program in 2008.
Linville represents the 42nd Legislative District in the Washington
State House of Representatives.
