OLYMPIA – Monday’s opening of the 2009 legislative session marked
Rep. Tim Probst’s first official day, but his work on job and the
economic issues began weeks ago.
In mid-November, Speaker Frank Chopp asked Probst, D-Vancouver, and Rep.
Larry Seaquist, D–Gig Harbor, to spearhead the caucus’ economic stimulus
efforts.
“We need to focus not just on short-term stimulus, but also on long-term
recovery,” Probst said. “The actions we take need to employ people
quickly and also restructure our economy to make us more competitive. We
need to help the middle class and create a better business environment.”
In addition to his work on economic recovery, Probst has been named Vice
Chair of the Education Committee.
“Our children deserve a top-notch education for its own sake, and
quality education also strengthens our economy,” Probst said. “High
school students need more opportunities to get into the business world.
We need more internship opportunities for high school students at local
businesses.” Probst was also named to the Education Appropriations
Committee. “Working on the appropriations side as well as the policy
side gives me a little extra leverage to make a difference,” Probst
said.
Probst was also named to the Community and Economic Development and
Trade Committee, where he is planning to bring in the principles of his
middle-class action plan.
“Clark County needs to be a global leader in solar energy,” Probst said.
“This is a growing market, and our experience in silicon and
semiconductors makes us a natural place to manufacture silicon solar
cells. If we can grab that new market now, we’ll have a new generation
of high-paying jobs for our people.”
Probst’s plan also includes property tax cuts for the middle class and
streamlining business regulations.
In one of the toughest budget years the state has seen, Probst wants a
bipartisan approach that is focused on results. He notes, “This is a
moment in history when our country needs to come together to face a
great challenge. It’s time to work together and solve the problems at
hand.”
