OLYMPIA – The Legislature on Sunday approved the Capital Budget, which despite a drop in the budget’s spending, turned out to be a win for communities in northeast King County. State Reps. Larry Springer and Roger Goodman, both D-Kirkland, voted for the construction plan to improve communities and create jobs.
“It’s been a hard year in Olympia, but the state needs to press on with local projects around the state,” Springer said. “Communities, including ours, depend on the state to be a partner and the Capital Budget followed through on that promise.”
Over $41 million will be sent to the 45
District, which includes the communities of Carnation, Duvall, Woodinville, and parts of Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish and the upper Snoqualmie Valley. The passed budget funds projects from July of this year, through June 2011.Lake Washington Technical College, an important school to the region, will continue to receive support from the state in the amount of $27.5 million. The majority of that will go to the Allied Health Building.
“Our economy is taking a step back right now, which means more people will be going back to the classroom to retrain for new jobs,” Goodman said. “Our community and technical colleges are ground zero in our state’s attempts to recover, so I’m proud that this budget moves Lake Washington Technical College forward.”
Other projects receiving funding:
- Northeast King County Skills Center will receive $9.049 million
- For redevelopment at Kirkland Park Place, $2 million
- Duvall Multi-Service Center will receive $618,000
Department of Social and Health Service projects were funded in the district at $1.2 million, $100,000 was allocated for the Mountains to Sound Greenway Heritage Area, and $394,000 will be used to improve the Stillwater Unit Fish Passage in the Snoqualmie Wildlife Area.
The Capital Budget now goes to the governor for consideration.
