2007 Priorities for the House Democratic Caucus

Education

Make sure our kids are qualified for 21st century jobs by standardizing math curricula across the state and hiring 750 new math and science teachers.

Make higher education a reality for more people by expanding Opportunity Grants to pay for education and job training that matches the needs of our economy.

Invest in early learning to help Washington’s young children enter their school years ready to learn and succeed.

Expand learning opportunities by offering voluntary full-day kindergarten.

Give voters the right to decide if their school levies must have 60% approval to pass.

Health Care

Make Washington’s children healthier by expanding health care coverage and making sure all kids receive regular medical care.

Help low income senior citizens hurt by Medicare Part D requirements by covering their co-payments.

Energy and the Environment

Take the next steps toward energy freedom by promoting clean biofuels grown on our farms, and energy efficiencies that cut pollution and global warming.

Protect our children from toxic chemicals in the environment through clean-up and prevention programs.

Preserve the natural beauty of Washington by supporting maintenance and enhancement of state and local parks.

Jobs, Business, and Prosperity

Strengthen support for working families across Washington by lowering health care costs, increasing the number of living wage jobs, and ensuring meaningful family leave.

Make sure all regions of our state share in the economic prosperity by continuing to support our cornerstone industries such as agriculture, forestry and aerospace

Reduce business health care costs by expanding ways small businesses can access affordable health coverage for their employees.

Help entrepreneurs succeed by increasing funding for local Small Business Development Centers, Economic Development Councils, and community college centers.

Family Security

Help all people in our state have a safe, affordable home by increasing the Housing Trust Fund and supporting manufactured and mobile home parks so seniors aren’t thrown out of their homes.

Reform mental health services for children so parents can get needed services for their children before problems get out of hand.
