Moscoso receives 2013 Golden Door Award

This past Friday, in its 29th Anniversary Gala, the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) presented Rep. Luis Moscoso with its Golden Door Award for his commitment to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees in our state.

2313 Golden Door“I am both honored and humbled to be awarded this meaningful recognition,” said the Mountlake Terrace Democrat, a first generation Peruvian-American and the first person of color to represent the First Legislative District, which includes parts of north King and south Snohomish counties. “I firmly believe our state is great due to the diversity of its people, and I will continue working toward equality and opportunity to ensure everybody in Washington has a voice and a chance to fully participate in civic life.”

NWIRP’s executive director, Jorge L. Barón, said that Moscoso has been a vocal advocate for issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities, specifically for his sponsorship of two important legislative efforts this session:

  • The Washington Voting Rights Act passed by the House but killed in the Senate, which would have allowed challenges to voting systems that disenfranchise voters; and
  • The Washington State Trust Act, aimed at setting statewide standards on when local jurisdictions could honor immigration detainer requests issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Founded in 1984, NWIRP serves low-income immigrants and refugees from more than 100 countries across Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
