PTA honors Rep. Maxwell with “Friend of Children” Award

OLYMPIA – Education advocate Rep. Marcie Maxwell (D-Renton) was recently honored with the Washington State PTA’s “Friend of Children” Award at the 2011 Annual Convention in SeaTac.

“I’m deeply honored to be recognized by such a hardworking and selfless community of parents and teachers,” Maxwell said. “I look forward to continuing strong support and creating educational opportunities for all Washington students.”

The PTA awarded both Reps. Maxwell and Dammeier in recognition of their exemplary work on behalf of children. In this year alone, Maxwell has prime sponsored legislation to recognize and encourage innovation in Washington schools, continue education reforms, and even help sustain funding for music education.

As the elected House Deputy Majority Leader for Education and Opportunity, Maxwell also plays a leading role in coordinating and focusing caucus action in the area of education and opportunity.

“The Friend of Children Award is the highest award given by the Washington State PTA, and is presented to a group or individual performing outstanding work on behalf of children throughout the years,” said Washington State PTA President Scott Allen while he presented the awards. “Though they are divided by party lines, Representatives Dammeier and Maxwell are united in their efforts to improve the lives of children through their public service.”
