Rep. Sherry Appleton resumes service on state Sentencing Guidelines Commission

After a two-year hiatus, State Rep. Sherry Appleton (D-Poulsbo, 23rd district) was appointed on Friday (Mar. 27) to serve once again as a member of the Washington State Sentencing Guidelines Commission.

According to its website, the Sentencing Guidelines Commission is directed by state law “to evaluate and monitor adult and juvenile sentencing policies and practices, recommend modifications to the governor and the Legislature and serve as a clearinghouse and information center on adult and juvenile sentencing.” Appleton served on the Commission from 2007 to 2013, and during that time chaired the Commission’s Juvenile Sentencing Committee.

“A longtime priority of mine, dating back to well before I entered public life, has been increasing public safety by advocating for fair and effective criminal justice,” Appleton said. “I thank the Speaker of the House, Frank Chopp, for this appointment, and I look forward to returning to this important work.”

Appleton has represented Kitsap County’s 23rd legislative district since 2005, and is chair of the House Committee on Community Development, Housing and Tribal Affairs.  A former Poulsbo city council member, she has also served on the Washington State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the Puget Sound Partnership, and currently serves on the state Commission on Judicial Conduct and the Office of Public Defense Advisory Board.  She is a member of the executive committee of Council of State Governments/West.
