Today a bill to expand computer science education in Washington was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee. The bipartisan measure sponsored by Reps. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island, and Chad Magendanz, R-Issaquah, will help prepare students for jobs in the high-tech industry. The Senate likes to talk about its tuition plan, touting it as a “tuition cut.”  But they leave out a few facts: First, the Senate tuition plan does almost nothing for the majority of Washington’s students.  The majority (over 280,000, or around 60%) of Washington students attend community colleges.  The Senate tuition plan does almost nothing for these students—zero cut in the first year of the biennium and a 1.8% cut (about $60) in the second year.  It’s not difficult … Continue reading
