Fighting hunger and helping families, one meal at a time.

From left to right, Annie, Pastor Julie and Rep. Kagi

Earlier this week, Rep. Ruth Kagi paid a visit to Annie’s Community Kitchen, located in the Fellowship Hall of the Edmonds Lutheran Church.

“Annie’s Kitchen” was started by Annie Fortnum and Bob Snyder in 2004 in response a growing hunger in our country. Fifty-million Americans  suffer from hunger.

The all volunteer effort at Annie’s Kitchen offers a free meal every Wednesday night from 5-6:30. The dinner has grown tremendously, from serving four people the first time to serving almost 11,000 meals each year to local residents.

Hunger in the United States is worsening. In a country with so much wealth, it is despicable that 1 in 5 children live in a home that doesn’t know where their next meal will come from. Proper nourishment and nutrition is critical, especially to our children.  Without it, their physical and mental development suffer – often with lifelong consequences.

The community at Annie’s Kitchen understands the struggles of working families.  They understand that a full day’s work doesn’t necessarily equal a living wage. Their efforts at Annie’s Kirchen go a long way in fighting hunger. The home-cooked, nutritious meal they offer – no strings attached – is for some, the best meal they will get all week.

Thank you, Annie and Bob, for your efforts to feed our families!
