Safety and Health Conference saluting heroes, heroines

The 63rd Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference is saluting 23 Washington working people for their heroic, life-saving actions while on the job. These honored guests will receive the Governor’s Lifesaving Award at the conference being held today and tomorrow in the Spokane Convention Center. The awards luncheon Friday will honor the Lifesaving Award recipients, who have been selected by an independent committee of the conference advisory board. The board, in turn, is comprised of labor and business representatives.

Sponsored by the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), the conference is also featuring safety demonstrations and workshops. Special events such as the 17th Annual Forklift Rodeo and the 41st Annual Pole Top Rescue Competition are also highlighting the 2014 conference. Check this edition of the HDC Advance from earlier this year for more details on the yearly Forklift Rodeo. Top utility crews from around the state will vie with one another in the yearly competition simulating a pole-top rescue.

Saving a motorist trapped in his car in a pond, saving a potential choking victim, and saving a couple from carbon-monoxide poisoning are three of the life-saving heroics of the honorees. Check this fact sheet for the complete list of award recipients, as well as a description of their heroism.

Folks are invited to attend tomorrow’s luncheon separately for $25, or as part of the conference. There will also be audience seating available at no charge.
