No doubt a modern-day Alexis de Tocqueville would write home about our love of a good summertime soirée.

Any chronicler of everyday life in our 50 states would need search high, low, and in-between to find anything more Uncle Sam than community festivals.

These homegrown doings, not to mention our dozens of county and state fairs, are as much a part of the communal scene here in the Evergreen State as apple pie and baseball.

An HDC Advance post just a few weeks back — speaking of fairs — explained that our world-famous “Puyallup Fair” has undergone a rebranding. It’s now called the Washington State Fair. This Sept. 6-22 event will still welcome a million-plus visitors to its historic, 160-acre Puyallup venue.

There are 55 women and men on the job year-round in the Puyallup facilities and more than 7,500 people work this fair in every summer’s closing weeks. The Washington State Fair is one of the top-10 attended fairs in the entire nation – a significant shot in the economic arm for local and regional coffers.

Fair season 2013 is underway. Here’s a list of the 2013 fairs in most of Washington’s 39 counties. This Washington State Department of Agriculture website features additional info about these quintessentially American goings-on.
