Flouride safety questions still remain

Healthy teeth are an important part of an overall wellness plan for all families. For many cities, adding fluoride to the municipal water supply has been a way to combat tooth decay.

Last month, the Fircrest City Council met to discuss the future of adding fluoride to the city’s water supply. By a vote of 5-2, the council decided to keep the tooth decay preventing additive in the water.

However, some people remain unconvinced. They believe that fluoride is a dangerous additive and one which should be removed from the water for the sake of the public’s health.

What do the experts say?

The Centers for Disease Control list fluoride as one of the top ten “great public health achievements of the 20th century.”

Nearly every medical and scientific association of any regard supports the fluoridation of water as an excellent path for reducing the personal pain, and the social costs, that can come from tooth decay. Click here to see an exhaustive list of organizations that support fluoridation.

This list includes, but is not limited to, the American Dental Association which says “The ADA continues to endorse fluoridation of public water as the most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.”

What is the state of Washington’s position on the matter? The Department of Health notes that “Thousands of research studies and 60 years of experience have shown that water fluoridation is safe, effective, and the best method of improving oral health in a community.”
