Manufacturing jobs in Washington climbed last year

Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) reported today that Washington gained 6,612 manufacturing jobs from January 2012 to January 2013, that’s a 2.2% growth, which is more than double the increase reported for 2011.

According to MNI, there are 6,716 manufacturers in Washington employing 303,182 workers.

manufacturingThe greater job gains were in:

  • Transportation: 49,826 jobs, up 3% in 2012.
  • Food products: 39,311 jobs, up 1.5%,
  • Fabricated metals: 30,417 jobs, up 3.3%.

The largest manufacturing job concentration is in Northwest Washington with 200,312 jobs, up 1.9% in 2012, followed by:

  • Southwest Washington: 62,385 jobs, up 1.4%
  • Northeast Washington: 22,005, jobs, up 4.7%
  • Southeast Washington: 18,480 jobs, up 5.2%.

The president of MNI, Tom Durbin, said our state’s industrial climate continues to improve and that our aerospace industry, our state’s abundant natural resources, our educated workforce and access to capital have all boosted exports and encouraged hiring.
