Reform will protect victims of domestic violence

Most murders don’t happen because some genius serial killer is stalking the streets of Seattle or Spokane.

Police and prosecutors know that homicide victims usually die at the hands of somebody they know – especially if the victim is a woman. The numbers are stark: more than half of all murder victims are women killed by husbands or boyfriends, usually with a gun.

That’s why a new law headed to the governor’s desk is so important.

House Bill 1840 aims to stop that cycle of violence by stepping in when a victim of domestic violence gets a protection order from the court. The law gives judges the power to order that the person’s firearms be taken away during the duration of that protection order.
