Stay healthy, stay learning

There are many things that make September a wonderful month in Washington – fall foliage, cozy sweaters, and everything pumpkin flavored. But one bad thing that comes with September is cold season; as kids head back to school, viruses head back to school with them.

Most people hear colds and think dark, winter days. But September is usually the peak cold month . Schools provide the perfect breeding ground for viruses. It only takes one sick child to come to school ill and infect many of his or her classmates.

So what can you do to help your children stay healthy?

  • Hand washing is the #1 daily ritual that can prevent them (and you!) from getting sick.
  • Make sure your child is up to date on his or her vaccines.
  • Teach your child to cover his or her mouth while coughing or sneezing and to keep hands away from eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Get the flu vaccine.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day – more if you are very active.
  • Get plenty of sleep (7-9 hours a night) – this is especially important for teenagers who often lack sleep.
