Washington State House Democratic Leadership responds to DACA decision

“The president’s callous decision to rescind the DACA program protecting more than 17,000 young Washingtonians is incredibly disheartening and an affront to the values of our state and our nation. House Democrats stand with our undocumented youth, who came to this country with their parents who were looking for a better life for their families. The United States is their home. Their roots are here in our communities where they attend school, work, and serve in our military.

“Instead of ripping families apart and denying young people the opportunity to participate fully in the American Dream, we should be working on ways to fully integrate DACA recipients into our society with the proper legal protections. That’s why the Legislature, with strong bipartisan support, passed the Washington DREAM Act in 2014. This landmark legislation paved the way to higher education for young people aspiring to a college education but unable to afford it.

“Trump promised ‘heart and compassion‘ in resolving the DACA issue, but today’s decision lacks both. House Democrats will continue our efforts to expand opportunity for all, and stand against attempts to inflict harm on people in our communities.”
