A Stronger, Fairer Washington – and Let’s Talk Over Coffee ☕

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we wrap up this year’s legislative session, I’m feeling both proud of what we’ve accomplished together and deeply grateful to represent you.

This session, we made meaningful progress toward building a Washington that works better for everyone.

Making Our Tax Code Fairer

One of the most important steps we took was passing the Millionaire’s Tax, a long-overdue reform that helps to rebalance our upside-down tax system.

Here’s the simple truth: More than 99% of Washingtonians will not pay this tax. But 100% of Washingtonians will benefit.

As Chair of the Finance Committee, this work is deeply personal to me. For too long, working families have carried a disproportionate share of the tax burden while the wealthiest few paid far less than their fair share.

This proposal changes that and allows us to invest in the services people across our state rely on every day.

What This Means for You

The Millionaire’s Tax helps make possible real, tangible benefits for Washington families:

  • Expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, putting money back into people’s pockets
  • Making everyday essentials more affordable through sales tax exemptions on diapers, hygiene products, and over-the-counter medications
  • Moving us closer to free school meals for all students
  • Continued investments in child care, early learning, and education

This is about building a tax code and a state that reflects our values: fairness, opportunity, and shared responsibility.

Finishing the Job

My penny bill was signed by the governor!

With the federal government no longer producing pennies, many businesses across Washington have already begun running out of them. That creates confusion at the register for both customers and retailers.

My bill, House Bill 2334, provides a clear and consistent approach. It allows businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest five cents when making change. Card payments remain unchanged.

This is a simple fix, but an important one.

I introduced this legislation after hearing directly from retailers and constituents who were already navigating these challenges. It’s a good example of how we can respond thoughtfully and proactively to real-world problems.

Signing off for now!

Because we’re in an election year, there are restrictions under the state’s Ethics in Public Service Act (EYA) that limit how legislators can communicate using official channels.

Because of these restrictions, my office will not be sending updates through official legislative communications until after the election is certified.

That said, I remain fully committed to serving you. You are always welcome to reach out to me directly with your questions, concerns, ideas, and advocacy. Hearing from you is essential to this work, and I look forward to continuing the conversation!

Hope to see you around the district this summer!

Rep. April Berg
