Newly elected Rep. Lytton sworn in, focused on state budget solutions

OLYMPIA – It is only her first week on the job, but newly elected State Representative Kristine Lytton (D – Anacortes) already has a calendar resembling a Tetris game. A steady stream of citizens, stakeholders, and committee meetings fills nearly every minute of the workday, followed by caucus meetings well into the evening.

Getting used to the pace of a legislative session can take some time. Yet despite all the distractions, Lytton remains focused on balancing the state budget while doing as little harm as possible to the services many in the district rely on these days.

Beginning her first term as state representative, Kris represents the 40th District, which includes San Juan County and parts of Skagit and Whatcom Counties. “The region I’m honored to represent has some unique qualities that set it apart from many others around the state,” said Lytton. “Despite being hit hard by the recession, our region has so much potential, and so much to offer the rest of the state and nation, as well as our trading partners. It’ll take some time, but I’m confident we’ll bounce back from this downturn stronger than before.”

A lifelong advocate for kids and Education, Lytton was chosen by the majority Democrats to serve as Vice Chair of the House Education committee, as well as a member of the Agriculture & Natural Resources and the Capital Budget committees. Lytton believes these assignments will give her a voice in policy discussions that have a great impact on the region. Prior to running for public office, Kris served two terms on the Anacortes School Board and has served with the Anacortes Schools Foundation, the Senior College Board and the PTA.

“The best way for us to ensure a strong and stable economy, as well as a quality of life our children deserve, is to provide them with a world-class education,” added Lytton. “That’s my goal, and that will be my priority as we fight for every dollar in the state budget.”

Rep. Lytton also knows it will take a concerted effort by all to protect education funding, and welcomes the opportunity for collaboration with constituents and concerned students and parents. “I hope to make these tough choices with as much input as possible from those back home.”
