“Earlier this session I stood with legislators from across the state, Democrats and Republicans, to introduce a package of bills designed to close the achievement gap in Washington. I’m proud of the legislation we crafted and I am thankful to the lawmakers, educators, parents and students who stood with me in support of the measures.
“As with any reform proposal, I understand and appreciate that this is a process. You can’t expect to change minds in a day, month, or even one legislative session. For me, this was about a conversation that needed to happen this year and I’m glad it did.
“Yesterday the House took action on legislation that is very much a step in the right direction for Washington schools. The bill establishes a pilot program allowing colleges and universities to work with struggling schools to turn around student achievement. Collaboration and innovation are desperately needed in our public schools, and I am hopeful this partnership will have a positive impact on underperforming schools across the state.”
