Tax relief promised, after spike in state revenue forecast

Connelly: Good news for residents smacked with large increase in property taxes

A big boost in Washington’s revenue forecast has leaders of both parties in Olympia promising property tax relief.

The promises come just as households in King and Pierce Counties are getting socked with big boosts in their property tax bills, the result of what the Legislature did last year.

“The extraordinary revenue growth will allow us to meet our legal and moral obligation to our public schools and to mental health care,” said Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge, who chairs the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

“It will also allow us to reduce the property tax burdens imposed by Senate Republicans last year,” Rolfes added.  (The GOP controlled the Senate in 2017, Democrats now hold a one-vote majority in the upper chamber.)

The good news came Thursday in the state’s February revenue forecast, just as the Legislature was writing this year’s supplemental budget.
