Virginia legislature passes Equal Rights Amendment in historic vote
Both chambers of Virginia’s General Assembly passed the Equal Rights Amendment Wednesday, fulfilling a promise that helped Democrats seize control of the legislature and marking a watershed moment in the nearly century-long effort to add protections for women to the U.S. Constitution. The lopsided votes capped an emotional week in which Democrats — particularly female lawmakers, who now hold unprecedented positions of power in Richmond — celebrated history in the making. Seattle expands capacity at emergency shelters, says no one will be turned away
As temperatures drop in Seattle, the city is again expanding capacity at its emergency shelters to serve individuals experiencing homelessness who are trying to escape the cold and snow. Seattle is vowing no one in need will be turned away, as the city said it has capacity to serve about 600 people through different locations across Seattle. Continue reading at Seattle PI. Plastic bag ban passes Washington Senate again
The Washington Senate has once again approved a measure to ban single-use plastic bags. The chamber voted 30-19 Wednesday to re-pass the measure it first passed during last year’s legislative session. The bill now heads to the House, where it stalled last year. The bill would ban stores from giving out single-use plastic carryout bags and require an 8-cent charge for other bags handed out. Continue reading at Union-Bulletin.
