Washington voters approved comprehensive sex ed. Now what?
Nearly 58% of voters gave their stamp of approval to Referendum 90 earlier this month, signing off on a bill that requires public schools to provide comprehensive sexual health education by the 2022-23 school year. The bill on the topic was introduced in January 2019 and signed into law in March 2020, but was the subject of much heated debate among legislators and their constituents. Washington needs strong privacy law
Although Washington’s Legislature won’t convene until January, progress is already happening on a much needed state privacy law. State Sen. Reuven Carlyle, D-Seattle, spent months gathering feedback from privacy experts, industry and others on a new version of the privacy act that nearly passed during the last session. State lawmakers prepare to address police reform
The new reform proposals come on the heels of massive protests in the wake of police killings of George Floyd in Wisconsin, Manuel Ellis in Tacoma and more. Democrat Roger Goodman chairs the House Public Safety Committee. “The use of deadly force should be used less often than it is today and that the duty to preserve life and that less-than-lethal use of means of force should be a priority,” he said.
