Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade; states can ban abortion
The Supreme Court has ended the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump. What the Supreme Court abortion decision means for Washington
Since the leaked draft of the U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision came out in May, people have been weighing the consequences for Washington, as well as for the rest of the country. Now, the decision is here: Roe v. Wade is overturned. The Supreme Court, the decision by its conservative majority, ended constitutional protections for abortion that had stood for nearly a half century. West coast states commit to being safe haven for people seeking abortions, reproductive healthcare
The governors of Washington, California and Oregon are launching a multi-state commitment to be safe havens for all people seeking abortions and other reproductive healthcare. The Multi-State Commitment affirms the governors’ commitment to defend access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion and contraceptives. The effort also commits to protecting patients and doctors against efforts by other states to export their abortion bans to these Western states. The announcement comes as the Supreme Court of the United States struck down Roe v. Wade, which in turn bans abortions in multiple states. Continue reading at KXLY. (Ted S. Warren)
