Seattle joins national protest following Minneapolis ICE shooting
Approximately 200 protesters filled the block in front of the Henry M. Jackson Federal building in downtown Seattle Wednesday night, part of nationwide protests after the fatal shooting of a Minnesota woman by a federal immigration officer. “Nicole should not have been murdered for showing care for her community,” Jonathan Toledo told the Seattle crowd, speaking on behalf of the Legalization for All Network, one of the groups that called for the emergency protests.

An ICE officer’s fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday ignited tensions on Capitol Hill, with Democrats raging about both the shooting itself and their Republican colleagues’ reactions to it. Worried about surveillance, states enact privacy laws and restrict license plate readers
As part of its deportation efforts, the Trump administration has ordered states to hand over personal data from voter rolls, driver’s license records and programs such as Medicaid and food stamps. At the same time, the administration is trying to consolidate the bits of personal data held across federal agencies, creating a single trove of information on people who live in the United States. Many left-leaning states and cities are trying to protect their residents’ personal information amid the immigration crackdown. But a growing number of conservative lawmakers also want to curb the use of surveillance technologies, such as automated license plate readers, that can be used to identify and track people.
