OLYMPIA – Today, the Washington State House of Representatives passed HB 2155 which prohibits AI tools from using nursing titles or credentials.
This bill protects nurses, patients, and public trust as artificial intelligence and automation are increasingly used in health care settings. It will ensure that human beings seeking medical care will know when they are and are not interacting with human beings who are medical professionals.
“As more and more people look for medical advice from chatbots and AI, it is critical that they know what exactly they are interacting with and the limits of the technology,” said Rep. Edwin Obras (D-Sea Tac), prime sponsor. “AI cannot be held accountable if something goes wrong. This bill will help protect the integrity of the profession and protect patients when they are at their most vulnerable.”
HB 2155 passed 87-8. It now heads to the State Senate for consideration.
