Mena’s “Day of the 12s” advances following Seahawks Super Bowl victory

OLYMPIA — Just days after the Seattle Seahawks captured a Super Bowl championship, the Washington State House of Representatives advanced House Bill 1759, sponsored by Rep. Sharlett Mena, D-Tacoma, to officially designate December 12 as “Day of the 12s.”

The legislation recognizes the passion, loyalty, and cultural impact of the 12s — the Seahawks’ legendary fanbase, often described as the “twelfth player” on the field.

“This past weekend reminded the entire country what we’ve always known here in Washington — the 12s are unmatched,” said Mena. “From packed stadiums to living rooms, that energy, pride, and unity are part of who we are. This bill honors the fans who show up year after year and make Washington proud.”

Mena’s measure would add December 12 to the list of recognized observances in state law. The designation would not create a paid state holiday but would formally acknowledge the unique role the 12s play in Washington’s identity and community spirit.

“After a Super Bowl victory that brought our communities together, this is a fitting way to celebrate the spirit that defines Washington,” Mena said. “The 12s aren’t just part of the game — they’re part of our story.”

If approved by the Senate and signed into law, December 12 would officially become “Day of the 12s” in Washington state.
