With Senate approval of Thomas’ bill, Washington is one step closer to telling companies, “Don’t chip me, bro!”

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Senate has passed legislation banning microchipping in work environments. Sponsored by Rep. Brianna Thomas, D-Seattle, House Bill 2303 prohibits employers from offering or requiring employees to participate in microchipping programs.

“Microchipping isn’t prevalent yet, but the technology is here,” said Thomas. “Preempting any future programs means we keep employees safe. They are telling their employers, ‘Don’t chip me, bro.’ And we have their back.”

Washington is on the way to becoming the 14th state to pass legislation limiting or banning the use of microchips in work environments. And like those other states, individuals retain their ability to explore this growing technology on their own accord.

“Once this Pandora’s box is opened, we won’t be able to roll the thing back,” continued Thomas. “We needed to take preemptive action. With this vote, we are one step closer.”

House Bill 2303 received strong bipartisan support, garnering 87 of 98 possible votes in the House and 48 of 49 votes in the Senate (with one member excused). The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk.
