THE WASHINGTON STATE LATINO DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON DOLORES HUERTA’S RECENT REVELATIONS AND THE FUTURE OF THE FARMWORKER MOVEMENT

We are devastated by the harrowing truth Dolores Huerta shared yesterday, and by the voices of other survivors who have come forward. We commend Huerta’s courage and stand in solidarity with her and with every woman who has experienced abuse and endured that burden in silence.
What was revealed is deeply disturbing. While these events occurred in a different time, they reflect power dynamics that persist today—where those in positions of authority and control can exploit, silence, and harm others.
The Me Too Movement helped bring accounts of humiliation, abuse, harassment, and violence front and center, but it did not make their stories any easier to tell. Now, Huerta reminds us that we must continue creating safe spaces for survivors to speak and be heard. Too many people have had to carry their painful experiences alone for too long.
While Washington state formally recognized March 31 as César Chávez Day, we stand with the United Farm Workers, as well as community and labor organizations within our state and across the nation that have reported they will not observe this day.
The farmworker movement has never belonged to a single individual. It belongs to the workers, the families, and the generations who have fought for dignity, fairness, and respect. The detrimental actions of one person cannot erase the progress achieved through collective struggle.
We will join in the celebration of Dolores Huerta on April 10 to honor her accomplishments and lifelong dedication to workers, to women, and to justice. We pay tribute to the farmworker movement through our commitment to truth and dignity as we ensure that we will listen, believe and support those who speak up—no matter how long it takes.
We will work alongside colleagues in both chambers to define how Washington will formally honor the farmworker movement going forward.

EL CAUCUS DEMÓCRATA LATINO DEL ESTADO DE WASHINGTON EMITIÓ LA SIGUIENTE DECLARACIÓN SOBRE LAS RECIENTES REVELACIONES DE DOLORES HUERTA Y EL FUTURO DEL MOVIMIENTO DE TRABAJADORES DEL CAMPO
Estamos devastados por la desgarradora verdad compartida por Dolores Huerta ayer, así como por las voces de otras sobrevivientes que han dado un paso al frente. Reconocemos la valentía de Huerta, nos solidarizamos con ella y con cada mujer que ha sufrido abuso y ha soportado esa carga en silencio.
Lo que fue revelado es profundamente perturbador. Aunque estos hechos ocurrieron en otros tiempos, reflejan dinámicas de poder que persisten hoy en día—donde quienes ocupan posiciones de autoridad y control pueden explotar, silenciar y causar daño a otras personas.
El Movimiento Me Too ayudó a colocar experiencias de humillación, abuso, acoso y violencia, en primer plano, pero no hizo que fuera más fácil compartir esas historias. Hoy, Huerta nos recuerda que debemos seguir creando espacios seguros para que las sobrevivientes puedan hablar y ser escuchadas. Son demasiadas las personas que solas han tenido que cargar con dolorosas experiencias durante demasiado tiempo.
Aunque el estado de Washington reconoció formalmente el 31 de marzo como el Día de César Chávez, nos unimos al sindicato United Farm Workers, así como a organizaciones comunitarias y laborales en nuestro estado y en todo el país, que han señalado que no observarán esta fecha.
El movimiento de trabajadores del campo nunca ha pertenecido a un solo individuo. Pertenece a los trabajadores, a las familias y a las generaciones que han luchado por la dignidad, la justicia y el respeto. Las acciones dañinas de un sujeto no pueden borrar los avances logrados a través de la lucha colectiva.
Nos uniremos a la celebración de Dolores Huerta el 10 de abril para honrar sus logros y su vida dedicada a los trabajadores, las mujeres y la justicia. Rendimos homenaje al movimiento de trabajadores del campo a través de nuestro compromiso con la verdad y la dignidad, a la vez que aseguramos que escucharemos, creeremos y apoyaremos a quienes alzan la voz—sin importar cuánto tiempo tome.
Trabajaremos junto a colegas en ambas cámaras para definir la manera en que Washington honrará formalmente al movimiento de trabajadores del campo en el futuro.
