Washington sues Trump over vote-by-mail restrictions
Washington state is fighting President Trump’s latest attempt to give the federal government more control over vote-by-mail elections. Why it matters: Trump’s March 31 executive order aims to bar the U.S. Postal Service from mailing federal election ballots to anyone not on a federally approved list — a shift state officials say would disenfranchise many Washington voters. Driving the news: Washington Attorney General Nick Brown is co-leading a lawsuit challenging the president’s order, which he called “patently unconstitutional.” Continue reading at Axios. Lawsuit aims to block new eligibility requirements for WA sheriffs
Much of the law takes effect at the end of April, just in time for the electoral candidate filing period in early May. Most county sheriffs, including the four plaintiffs, are up for election this year. Almost all of Washington’s sheriffs take office via election, while police chiefs are appointed. As sports betting grows, is WA equipped to treat gambling addiction?
Through a state program, Washington residents who can’t get gambling treatment covered by their insurance can access it for free. The state Health Care Authority partners with a network of contracted providers to offer free assessment and outpatient counseling for people struggling with gambling addiction or for their loved ones…After a 2022 state task force report found that the state’s program didn’t have enough resources, the Legislature increased funding for the program by 66% — to $2.43 million for the 2023-25 biennium.
