Will landmark Voting Rights ruling erase Latino gains in WA?
A landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Wednesday could reveal a possible Achilles’ heel in a federal court ruling that gave Latino voters a chance for stronger representation in Olympia. The Washington state legislative boundary changes were in response to a decision in U.S. District Court that found the 2021 state redistricting commission had illegally “cracked” apart the region’s communities by watering down dense Latino communities with white voters. 2 data center developers pull Seattle plans amid opposition, talk of ban
Two developers have withdrawn plans to add large-scale data centers to Seattle’s electric grid following a flood of backlash, news that emerged just before three members of the City Council announced Thursday that they will propose a one-year moratorium. Last month, The Seattle Times reported that four companies had approached Seattle City Light about building five large data centers with a combined maximum demand of 369 megawatts — roughly one-third of what the city uses on an average day. Plan to sweep $4B from WA police and firefighter pension fund spurs lawsuit
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Timm Ormsby, D-Spokane, said he doesn’t believe the law “runs afoul of any court precedent,” after consultation with outside legal experts focused on pensions during the legislative process. “Whatever pension those firefighters and law enforcement signed when they came into service, those benefits are guaranteed,” Ormsby said, adding that the redirected surplus funding will be used for the benefit of all Washingtonians.
