Feds demand WA revise student policies on privacy, transgender rights
The U.S. Department of Education is demanding that Washington’s education agency change its policies on how schools share student records with their parents, part of the federal government’s effort to “enforce parental rights laws across the country.” The request, announced Thursday, demands Washington and California provide the federal agency with information about how each state shares student records with parents, citing recent federal court decisions on related issues. Controversial Central WA gas power plant for data centers canceled amid activist backlash
The proposed project would have installed 14 gas generators in Quincy, Washington, on land owned by the Grant County Public Utility District. The fuel for those generators would have been delivered by more than a dozen daily semitruck trips. Texas-based energy company VoltaGrid planned to build the facility to meet growing demand from the nearby Vantage data center campus, and the utility approved the plan. But VotlaGrid’s proposal hit a snag when it sought approval from Washington’s Department of Ecology. The agency planned to approve VoltaGrid’s application for an “air quality notice of construction permit,” the first hurdle a company must clear if it plans to add a new source of air pollution. Washington AG Nick Brown fights back against PSE’s proposed 29% electric, 20% gas rate hikes
Brown’s office is arguing PSE’s plan to raise electric rates by 29% and natural gas rates by 20% over the next three years is excessive and unreasonable. “We need to fight to keep Washington affordable for everyone,” Brown said in a prepared statement. “PSE should only raise prices on consumers when necessary and reasonable, and we do not think that is the case here.” Continue reading at MyNorthwest.
