Fee-free Purple Heart license plates go into effect

OLYMPIA –As of Sunday, July 28, Purple Heart recipients or their families can receive Washington State’s Purple Heart license plate without paying a vehicle license fee, license plate fee or vehicle excise tax. This new law applies to one vehicle per eligible applicant.

Last session, Rep. Lisa Callan (D-Issaquah) sponsored the bill that made this change to honor Purple Heart recipients.

“We should continue to honor the brave veterans whose sacrifice was recognized with a Purple Heart medal. Their selflessness and bravery represent the best our country has to offer,” said Callan. “The least we can do is provide this license plate to them or their families without cost. They have already given more than we can ever know.”
