Governor signs Kilduff bill allowing tax-free savings accounts for persons with disabilities

OLYMPIA – After receiving overwhelming bipartisan support in both the state House and Senate, the ABLE Act was signed by Governor Jay Inslee in a public ceremony yesterday. In attendance included Rep. Christine Kilduff’s (D-University Place) and Emma, a 13-year old who testified in favor of the bill in front of the House Early Learning and Appropriations committees.

The ABLE Act allows tax-free savings accounts similar to college savings plans for housing, education, transportation, health care and related expenses for persons with disabilities. Currently people with disabilities and their families can be penalized for having more than $2,000 in savings for programs like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income.

“I am so proud to join Emma and other advocates in support of this landmark bill that will help every family experience life to the fullest, with real choices about where to live and what to learn,” said Kilduff. “Everyone deserves a chance and this law helps families make sure that can happen.”
