First weeks in Olympia: safer roads, healthier students, and consumer protections

Hello friends,

The 2026 legislative session is officially underway in Olympia, and I’m honored to represent our community. Opening week moves fast — committees begin hearing bills right away, and legislators are working long hours to address the issues families are facing across Washington.

This session, I’m focused on practical, common-sense solutions that improve safety, strengthen schools, protect consumers, and make government work better. December’s floods were devastating and we’re working to help people recover. My latest video provides an overview on how we are looking to help this session.

My priorities this session

Safer roads and smarter transportation policy

Keeping people safe on our roads is one of the most important responsibilities we have — and that means preventing dangerous driving before tragedy happens.

Bill I’m working on this session:

  • HB 2362 — Impaired driving This bill strengthens Washington’s approach to impaired driving, helping keep dangerous drivers off the road and improving accountability.

Supporting student health and success

Kids can’t learn if they can’t breathe — and families deserve peace of mind that schools are prepared for emergencies.

Bill I introduced this session:

  • HB 2360 — Albuterol access in schools This is about helping schools respond quickly when a student has an asthma emergency — protecting students and supporting families.

Protecting consumers and improving financial fairness

When families are working hard to make ends meet, we should be cracking down on predatory practices — not making it easier for people to get trapped in debt.

Bill I introduced this session:

  • HB 2361 — Small loans maximum amount This bill addresses the maximum amount for small loans to help strengthen consumer protections and prevent harmful lending practices.

Responsible government and local decision-making

Strong communities need systems that work — whether that’s licensing, boundaries, or local governance processes.

Highlight bill:

  • HB 1304 — Boundary review filings (already passed and signed into law in 2025) These bills focus on improving how government processes work, helping ensure transparency and efficiency.

Protecting communities through prevention and resilience

Washington needs to be ready for emergencies — whether that’s a natural disaster or a safety issue that affects our neighborhoods.

Bills I’ve worked on include:

  • HB 1810 — Seismic hazard risk reduction This bill supports efforts to reduce risk and improve preparedness for seismic events.

I am actively working on an additional seismic risk reduction bill, more information to come!

Progress we’ve already made (and why it matters)

In the Legislature, results matter — and I’m proud of the work we’ve already delivered.

In 2025, I helped pass bills to:

  • Improve young driver safety (ESHB 1878, now law)
  • Support clear and accountable local processes (HB 1304, now law)

That progress gives us momentum heading into this session.

How to follow along (and make your voice heard)

You don’t have to travel to Olympia to be part of the process:

If you’d like to share your thoughts with me directly, you can always reach out: Contact me.

Thank you for staying engaged and being part of this work. I’ll keep sharing updates as bills move through committees and we start taking votes on the House floor.

With gratitude,

Rep. Brandy Donaghy
