A chat in the park

We had the pleasure of a good conversation at Stewart Park during the last park chat on Saturday, July 17.

Among the issues discussed by people attending:

  • transportation and traffic concerns;
  • homelessness, tent sites, related crime, poverty, affordable housing, and tiny homes;
  • youth and schools; and
  • hiring demand and jobs.

The three of us–Sen. Jeannie Darneille, Speaker Laurie Jinkins, and Rep. Jake Fey–gave  updates on:

  • COVID recovery, the environment, and criminal justice;
  • funding for the YWCA and the Tacoma Housing Authority (Morgan Motel);
  • youth homelessness and treatment programs;
  • community-based model for policing and homelessness issues;
  • eviction mortarium in landlord/tenant relief;
  • federal CARES Act;
  • preventable illness and hospitalizations; and
  • challenges of session, with fewer bills but more bills of consequence.

The next two parks chats will be at Point Defiance Park on Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. and at Lincoln Park on Tuesday, Aug. 31 from 3 to 5 p.m.

We hope to see you there!
