Legislative Update: Important Bills to Watch This Year

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The 2026 Legislative Session is well underway, having just concluded our second week with a flurry of public hearings on proposed bills and votes on the House Floor.

On Martin Luther King Day, we spent time honoring and remembering Dr. King, with inspiring music and powerful speeches from my colleagues. As we consider legislation, MLK Day reminds us that we’re here to work on behalf of our communities and to ensure Washington can be place where equity and justice are not just talked about but are practiced.

Bills to Watch

Here are some of the important bills currently under consideration that prioritize protecting our kids, protecting our communities, and protecting our environment:

Regulating Artificial Intelligence Technologies

Protecting Animals

Protecting

Immigrant Communities

We want Washington to remain a leader in innovation and technological advancement. However, that should not come at the expense of our children or our communities. These bills are aimed at protecting consumers who use AI and ensuring our communities remain safe while the technology develops.

As a member of the informal “Fur Fighters Caucus” I am passionate about protecting our beautiful environment and wildlife, which are some of the greatest features of living in Washington. It’s important that they are managed effectively and humanely and safeguarded for everyone to enjoy in the future.

Many of our friends and neighbors are terrified right now because of the actions of federal law enforcement officers. As lawmakers, it is incumbent upon us to think of ways to respond to the needs of our constituents and work together to do as much as we can to support our community members.

A Legislative Page in My Office!

I’m proud to recognize Jayesh Singhal, an Eastside Preparatory School student who served as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives last week. It was an honor to sponsor Jayesh and welcome him to Olympia for this hands-on civics experience.

House pages take on important responsibilities—presenting the flags, delivering messages to members on the House floor, and distributing materials across the Capitol campus—while also receiving daily civics instruction, drafting their own bills, and participating in mock committee hearings.

Jayesh, whose family lives in Kirkland, is passionate about skiing, rowing, piano, politics, and economics, and it shows. Thank you, Jayesh, for your service and for bringing your curiosity and leadership to the People’s House!

What’s Next?

We continue to hear public testimony on bills and we will have floor action to debate and vote on bills that we want to send over to the Senate for consideration. Of course, I’ll be sure to keep you updated along the way. You can follow my legislative Facebook page for regular updates about what’s happening in the legislature and in the district.

Keep an eye out for my next legislative update!

All best wishes,
