Legislative News: Getting care when we need it the most

Dear neighbors,

We have reached the final week of the regular legislative session. It has been a busy few weeks of late nights debating bills on the House floor.

Here is a quick update from Olympia.

Washington makes history with Long-Term Care Trust Act

Long-Term Care Trust Act

This week, the Legislature passed the historic Long-Term Care Trust Act, which creates a brand new social security program to provide long-term care services. Most people do not save for long-term care, but most people end up needing some form of help as they age. With more people than ever moving into the 65+ age bracket, we need to start planning for the need for these services. I was proud to vote yes on this bill.

Civics education, the foundation to a healthy democracy

Civics Education

As chair of the House Committee on State Government and Tribal Relations, I believe that civics education is vital to a healthy democracy.

Take a look at this videowhere I chat with Rep. Laurie Dolan, D-Olympia, and Superintendent of Schools, Chris Reykdal, about civics education in and out of the classroom.

Learn more about civics education opportunities at the Legislature here.

Mobile/Manufactured Home Landlord-Tenant Act passes Legislature

MHLTA

This week the Legislature passed an update to the Mobile/Manufactured Home Landlord-Tenant Act, which I sponsored, for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century.

When a manufactured/mobile home park closes, or is sold to a new owner, an entire community is at risk for homelessness. This bill will keep our neighbors living in these communities involved in the conversation around affordable housing solutions.

The bill now goes to Gov. Jay Inslee to be signed into law.

New district office location coming soon

As we reach the end of this session, we will soon be headed back to our office in the 33rd Legislative District. We will be moving into a new district office space, and we will keep you updated as we finalize those details.

In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you have. We are here to help solve problems.

All best wishes,
