My statement on the shootings in New Zealand.

I was horrified to hear of the events that took place in Christchurch, New Zealand last week. This was a tragedy and my thoughts continue to be with those who suffered and have been affected by it. No one should be made to feel unsafe when gathering together to worship.

My sadness is accompanied by my rage in seeing an uprising of white supremacist activity. This type of hate fueled disregard for life sickens me.

Everyday men, women, and children of the Islamic faith are being oppressed and attacked for their beliefs and this is completely unacceptable. I want you to know that I hear you and I see what is happening. My colleagues and I are working hard to pass legislation that will protect our immigrants, faith communities, and communities of color. We are also working on passing legislation to keep firearms out of the hands of those that would use them with evil intent.

I am here for all of you. I stand with the Muslim community and I will do everything I can to protect you. This is a state that stands for freedom, justice, and equality; and it is my job to ensure these traits are protected and upheld.
