OLYMPIA — The Washington Retail Association has named Rep. Mari Leavitt (D–University Place) a Champion of Organized Retail Crime and Public Safety, recognizing her leadership in advancing solutions to address retail theft and improve community safety across Washington state. The honor highlights Rep. Leavitt’s work during the 2026 legislative session to strengthen accountability, support retailers and workers, and enhance public safety through bipartisan collaboration. “Keeping our communities safe and supporting the workers and small businesses that power our local economy has been a top priority of mine,” said Rep. Leavitt. “Organized retail crime impacts not just store owners, but employees, customers, and entire neighborhoods. I am grateful for the partnership with Washington Retail and others to advance thoughtful, effective solutions and garner critical related resources, and I’m honored by this recognition.” |
The Washington Retail Association specifically recognized Rep. Leavitt’s leadership on House Bill 1276, addressing organized retail theft, and House Bill 2729, the Retail Theft Accountability Act. Both measures focused on strengthening tools for law enforcement and improving coordination to better prevent and respond to organized retail crime.
In a letter announcing the award, the association noted that Rep. Leavitt’s “tireless leadership and extraordinary efforts” have helped move the state closer to ensuring safe and welcoming environments for employees and customers alike. The organization also emphasized her ability to bring stakeholders together and build bipartisan support for meaningful policy solutions.
Rep. Leavitt will be formally recognized at the Washington Retail Association Board of Directors Retreat on June 24 in Stevenson, Washington.
